The Daintree Rainforest
Firstly, we must get to know more about the Daintree Rainforest, located in the northern region of Queensland. It is part of the largest rainforest in Australia: The Wet Tropic Rainforest.
Moreover, this region is a wild combination of different environments, as you can see rainforests, beaches, and the great barrier reef in the same place. Depending on your preferences, you can quickly go from one place to another by driving or walking. However, the best way to explore Mossman Gorge is in a Daintree River cruise or a Daintree Rainforest tour.
Daintree National Park
In the Daintree Rainforest, we can find the Daintree National Park, which is located along the coastline of northern Australia and is divided into two main sections: Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation.
Mossman Gorge is fantastic if you’re a fan of hiking and connecting to nature, as it is filled with mountains and woodlands. Moreover, Cape Tribulation has sandy beaches and incredible biodiversity.
You are also going to find three rainforest rivers across the park, the Mossman River, Bloomfield River, and Daintree River. This place is also home to several local species of flora and fauna. Some scientists have even found trees that they thought to be extinct. Therefore, if you’re a fan of animals, you can enjoy the several hundred species in this rainforest.
Mossman Gorge Centre
Now we can talk about our main attraction, the Mossman Gorge Centre. This is a rural town in which a couple of hundred people live, and it is named like the Mossman River located to the west of the town. Several tourists visit this locality every year to walk through the 1.5 miles suspension bridge, which allows you to get close to the nature around you.
Moreover, this locality is home to the indigenous tribe Kuku Yalanji, so you must be highly respectful every time you decide to visit.
How to Get to Mossman Gorge
Although it may seem difficult, reaching Mossman Gorge isn’t hard. You only need to take a one-hour drive through the Captain Cook Highway if you’re traveling from Cairns. Moreover, if you’re in Port Douglas, it is much easier, as you only need to drive for 20 minutes until you arrive at your destination.
Keep in mind that you are likely to find residents in your way towards Mossman Gorge, and you should respect their privacy. In addition, please be as careful as possible and don’t park in not available areas, as you could get yourself and others in danger.
What to Do at Mossman Gorge
Luckily for you, there are several things to do at Mossman Gorge, and if you love discovering new cultures and learning about their history, you’re going to love being here. You could stay for a bit at the Mayi Café or look at the several indigenous artworks exposed in museums. However, if you want the full cultural experience, you can join one of the several tours led by the Kuku Yalanji people, who are more than glad to share their culture with you.
If you don’t have a car, there’s no need to worry, as there is a bus that leaves every 15 minutes and is meant to take you to the heart of the Daintree Rainforest. It is going to drop you at the beginning of the trail, and this is the favorite moment for all nature lovers, as now they’re free to wander around the gorge and explore the environment.
You can always decide to do a self-guided walk, but keep in mind that if this is your first time visiting the gorge, it is going to be quite confusing, and you may get lost. Therefore, being part of a tour is always a good idea!
What to Pack
If you’re thinking of visiting the world’s oldest rainforest, you must pack some things to be prepared for anything you may encounter. Take a look at our list of recommended items you should carry.
- A swimming suit and towels, but be aware there are no changing rooms in the Daintree River or in Port Douglas.
